Rules of the sea
Just like driving a car, driving a boat without proper instruction can be dangerous. Navigation rules, like the rules of the road, are key to the safety of everyone on your boat and around you on the water.
Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Before setting off, check out the Department of Marine & Ports Navigation Warnings
- Be mindful of other boats on the water and always maintain a safe speed
- Keep your wake low near other boats, swimmers, and the shoreline
- Keep clear when passing another boat. Generally, you have the right of way when a boat approaches you from your portside, but you must give way for boats approaching from the starboard
- Make a float plan that includes your planned route and a basic description of your craft, share it with Bermuda Radio or a responsible individual on land before you set off
- Never operate your vessel under the influence of drugs and alcohol
Remember that operating your vessel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal. If you plan on drinking, choose a designated driver and ideally a first mate before leaving the dock.
Check, check and check again
A day on the water can be a lot of fun, but it’s important to follow a pre-departure checklist to ensure your safety. The Marine Board Safety Regulations require most boats to have various safety equipment onboard, check out our pre-departure list below or for a printable version click here.
Remember to ensure that your equipment is all in good working order and that you have enough fuel for a round trip. Check equipment and fuel levels before every trip.
