Argus Walks the Walk with The Centre on Philanthropy Raises $34,438 for 125 Local Charities

(Hamilton, Bermuda, March 5, 2015) –The Argus Group and The Centre on Philanthropy today announce the results of the 6th annual Argus Walks the Walk with The Centre on Philanthropy 5K that took place on Sunday, February 22. A total of 1,094 people participated in the event raising $34,438 for local charities, the highest amount of money raised in the event’s history. The fundraiser is unique in that participants choose their favourite charity to receive a portion of the entry fee. This year, a record-breaking 125 local charities benefited from the event.

 

The ten non-profit organisations generating the most support were: SCARS, Bermuda Gymnastics Association, Bermuda Volleyball Association, Answering the Cry of the Poor, The Chewstick Foundation, Bermuda Zoological Society, The Scout Association, CedarBridge Academy PTSA, P.A.L.S. and Bermuda Sharks Swim Club.

 

Argus Walks the Walk with The Centre on Philanthropy took place over a fully marshalled 5K route, which started and finished on Wesley Street, home to both the Argus Group and The Centre on Philanthropy. Five dollars from each $25 entry fee went to support www.VOLUNTEER.bm, The Centre on Philanthropy’s online resource for volunteering.

 

Elaine Butterfield, Executive Director of The Centre on Philanthropy, says: “We are delighted that the walk raised such a significant amount of money that will benefit 125 non-profits. The volunteers and non-profits give their time and effort tirelessly to help a wide array of causes on the Island, during times when there is an increased demand for service and increased difficulty raising the funds to provide these vital services. We would like to thank the Argus Group for partnering with us to raise awareness and funds for such an important sector of the community.”

Alison Hill, Chief Executive Officer of the Argus Group, comments: “We are pleased that so many charities benefited from this fundraising event. We particularly commend the teams who walked together in the spirit of comradery and the creativity of those who walked in costumes to raise money for their favourite charity. Walking has so many health benefits – as our Thrive programme attests - and we were happy to see so many people having fun and getting some exercise on a Sunday morning.”

 

Congratulations to the largest corporate, youth and non-profit teams, ACE Group, CedarBridge Band-a-maniacs and Bermuda Gymnastics Association, respectively, as well as to the team with the best cheer, best coordinated outfits and the best choreography, a tie between Chewstick and North Village Community Club, SCARS and BePro, respectively.
