Support and care for your pregnancy

When you are expecting a child, it is important that you obtain the support and care you need to remain healthy and at ease. While there can be much to consider during pregnancy, gaining an understanding of your healthcare options and coverage is fundamental to ensuring both your wellness and that of your baby.

Maintaining routine care visits, making thorough preparations for childbirth and considering insurance coverage for your newborn are all important steps to take in your pregnancy journey.

Essential Routine Care

It is essential that you attend care visits early and consistently to experience a safe and healthy pregnancy. Schedule regular appointments with your OB-GYN for physical exams to provide effective monitoring of you and your baby’s health. These visits should occur:

  • Monthly up to 28 weeks’ gestation
  • Biweekly up to 36 weeks’ gestation
  • Weekly until delivery
  • Postpartum (about 49 days after delivery)

During these visits, your doctor will:

  • Record your weight
  • Read your blood pressure
  • Take a urine sample for analysis
  • Measure your belly
  • Examine your pelvis
  • Monitor fetal heart tone

Your emotional wellbeing is also an important factor in maintaining your health during pregnancy. Your doctor will ask you questions about how you’re feeling at each visit, so share what’s on your mind to ensure you get the support you need.

Preparing To Welcome Your Baby

Welcoming a new baby into the world is exciting, but sometimes it can feel overwhelming. You can help reduce any worry by making a birth plan, understanding your childbirth coverage and being fully prepared should you need overseas care. Completing these tasks early will put your mind at ease and allow you to stay focused on the positive.

1. MAKE YOUR BIRTH PLAN

To experience a safe and positive labour and delivery, discuss your delivery preferences with your doctor and support person and review your health insurance plan to verify which birthing options are covered for you (e.g. hospital and/or pre-certified home birth). It is particularly important to create a birth plan if you or your baby are at increased risk of developing health problems.

2. UNDERSTAND YOUR CHILDBIRTH COVERAGE

Check your health insurance plan to understand your local and overseas care coverage for delivery ahead of time. You can easily access your plan details at any time through your secure Argus Vantage member account so sign in or sign up.

Our preferred neonatal providers within our overseas network offer exceptional care. For guidance, support and precertification for overseas treatment, contact the Health Services team by email at overseascare@argus.bm or call 1-800-720-7315, our dedicated toll-free number.

3. BE PREPARED FOR TRAVEL

During your pregnancy, make sure you’re fully prepared in the event that you and/or your baby require overseas medical treatment. Keep the following ready and accessible to you and your support person:

  • Valid passport
  • Visas and other travel documents
  • Health insurance card
  • Emergency contacts list
  • Packed bag with essentials for you, your baby and your support person

Newborn Coverage

Once your baby is born, you’ll want to ensure they receive the care they need to keep them healthy. If your insurance is provided through an employer, notify their human resources department that you would like to add your child to your health insurance plan. If you have an Individual Health Plan, contact Argus directly at insurance@argus.bm or on 298-0888. Make sure to complete this within 31 days of delivery so that your child’s wellness visits, immunisations and development screening are fully covered.

Argus is committed to supporting you both throughout your pregnancy and after you give birth with our comprehensive maternity care coverage.
